Melanie is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers & Illustrators, associated with the Houston and Southern Breeze chapters. She is also the Vice President of Marketing for the Women Writing the West and a member of the International Reading Association and the Texas State Reading Association.

Melanie enjoys speaking to students, faculty, parents, writers, and others.

Tall Tale Talk
Features the Phoebe Clappsaddle series books (Pelican Publishing Co.) and teaches students about American tall tales. "The main character sets the tone of each book in this series. Phoebe Clappsaddle is a southwestern belle; she can ride and rope like any cowboy but she always uses her perfect manners, too—pinkies up and all." This includes information about the cowboy hat and the tumbleweed, and a demonstration of the lariat.

Pulling A Story Out Of The Air
This is a writing presentation that gives background information of a writing career, idea gathering hints, writing organizational skills, and revision suggestions to encourage students to ‘Pull Stories’ and enjoy the process.

Math-amania!
Features Melanie's Read-About Math Rookie Readers. The presentation shows the concepts of odd & even numbers, multiplication, math tools, numbers in different forms, and problem solving. She shows these concepts with socks, food, animals, bandanas, and the students themselves. The object is to show kids the math that is all around them and that it’s fun.
